Biography

Josef Gatti is an emerging filmmaker and artist specialising in visual storytelling and new technologies. Gatti's films explore the world around us through an introspective lens, rich in detail, to reveal the extraordinary in the ordinary. Gatti's artworks are created through practical experimentation and digital cinematic capture to produce images that are not only beautiful but also broaden our ability to perceive the world around us. Gatti works across the film, television, and music industry, on a variety of digital formats, and has created immersive projection works for museums, exhibitions, and international festivals.

PHENOMENA, 2021

PHENOMENA explores the universe around us through naturally occurring patterns and the forces of nature that create them. Art and science collide to take us on an ambitious, innovative, and psychedelic journey through the fabric of the universe. There are nine chapters in which natural forces are controlled with science and technology to produce mesmerising and hypnotic imagery - including energy, matter, soundwaves, light, electricity, magnetism, gravity, magnitudes and evolution. They build on each other to reveal the story of the universe unfolding from its elemental origins to create the stars, earth, and life. All imagery in this project is captured on camera, and produced with practical experiments, without the use of CGI.

PHENOMENA was born out of Gatti's curiosity for the universe and their passion for motion-imaging technologies. In late 2016 Gatti found themself looking for new and exciting ways to tell stories and connect with audiences, and had been discovering new ideas through science and philosophy. Gatti began experimenting with technology and nature - using physics to manipulate matter and energy - and recording them in extreme detail.

The imaging techniques in PHENOMENA incorporate timelapse, macro photography, light manipulation, state-of-the-art motion control, and high-speed cinematography. Captured in 6K RAW, the images produced are not only sophisticated, but they also provide a look at the universe beyond our natural perspective. Each visualisation required countless hours of experimentation. Each attempt required days of practical testing before the patterns were found, and only then began the process of recording. Ultimately, PHENOMENA reframes the universe around us to create an experience that is not only awe-inspiring, but encourages us to reconsider our place in the universe, and enriches our understanding and connection with nature.
