Within every being and environment exists a dance between order and chaos, nothing and something, light and dark. Though they exist as binaries, their interaction manifests in countless subsequent outcomes across a varied spectrum – each of which holds value and informs the human experience. This work aims to showcase both the duality and the amalgamation of these opposing forces. It represents the importance of seeking balance, straddling the line between material and immaterial, external and internal, love and fear, power and kindness. But it also highlights the beauty and sorrow that exist when the balance is skewed.
This piece was created by controlling image, motion and time within a digital framework through the manipulation of three corresponding knobs in a physical framework. The first knob distorts images by pixelation. Through control of the knob’s value, the amount of matter it spawns is also controlled, although its final form is left to chance. The second knob controls motion within a background layer that exists separate from image and time. Manipulation of this layer created static and waves within the digital framework, mirroring the invisible forces of nature that affect the material. The third knob controls time by triggering forced stops and starts to natural activity within the environment. In this framework, time and motion exist as separate, non-conflicting entities although shifts in time directly affect frequency of image distortion, forcing pixels to become rigid and maintain their last appearance.
Rubbed Genie is an artist specialising in interactive digital media and its non-interactive iterations.
