Matthew Newkirk’s work is a warning in regard to the subtle and subversive messages that are fed to us through mainstream media by power structures.
Drawing from DADA and The Situationists, Newkirk uses text in the form of sensational headlines so as to demonstrate the tactics employed by corporations, governing bodies, and the media carrier services that are most commonly used in this deception. The viewer is force fed cliché, buzz words and modern day mantras, adding to the confusion and complexities of modern life. Employing these same methods for his own agenda, Newkirk’s work acts as a warning to the ignorant, and as a weapon used to unmask and destroy the very mechanisms that keep society obedient and asleep.
Matthew Newkirk’s practice utilises the same mediums that deliver the news to us daily and investigates how mainstream media disrupts and distorts information. Newkirk’s research contributes to a new understanding of how power structures use new technologies and contemporary mediums to sustain their influence.
